:A key reason to use technology with young learners is to provide rich interactional opportunities and support comprehension and production to promote language acquisition. In practice, however, it is difficult to balance task demands and task support in technology-mediated activities to effectively exploit the potential for interactivity. This study addresses this issue by investigating live communication between distant classes of young learners using English as a lingua franca. This tandem project exploits the technical affordances of synchronous computer mediated communication (CMC) between primary school learners in France and Germany using live audio/video and screen-sharing in a task-based framework. Data include video recordings and participant interviews, and analysis highlights the features of task design and implementation which best exploit the excellent opportunities for authentic target language use which technology can provide.
